2013 Universal Harmony Concert

Each year Global Faith In Action sponsors a “Universal Harmony Concert”. The concert is a sacred music and dance interfaith dialogue. The 2013 concert included skilled musicians:
    • Cantor Mark Childs, cantor at Congregation B’nai B’rith in Santa, Barbara, California. He is “at home as a recitalist in Jewish art song, folk song, and all vocal music of the Jewish people.

    • Ustad Ghulam Farid Nizami, a master poet, composer, performer teacher and recording artist. He is one of the foremost musicians and instructors of Pakistan. He has performed for all Pakistani heads of state, three US presidents, Saudi King Abdullah, Jordani King Hussein, Nelson Mandela, Queen Elizabeth and Princess Diana. His principal instrument is Sitar.

    • Muhammad Faraz Nizami, is Ustad Nizami’s 13 year old son. He is a Master Tabla player, sings, performs on the Sitar and plays the Violin.

    • Jakub Jerzy Omsky is principal Cellist of the Wichita Symphony, and was born in Warsaw, Poland. Yo Yo Ma calls him “extraordinarily talented and a dedicated musician”. Jakub was the “Creative Programming Consultant” of the concert.

    • C. Nicholas (Nick) Johnson, professor and Director of Mime and Dance at Wichita State University. Nick has worked with and created choreography for Marcel Marceau.

    • Aaaron J. Pflumm is a dance performer and choreographer. He has toured both nationally and internationally. His works have been presented at the American College Dance Festival.

Included within this year’s concert are sacred musical pieces of West Africa, Far East and the Middle East as well as original music by the artists. The musicians and dancers met the day prior to the concert in retreat. During the retreat they shared their faith journeys, music they may want to share, and invited each other to feel free to join them as they shared music that expressed their faith tradition. Consequently, the concert was fresh, a real dialogue, and filled with improvisation. They simply let the “winds of God’s spirit” lead them. A few of the selections are available below. If you would like to receive a video of the entire concert email your request to: gfianow@gmail.com. The cost is $15.00 including postage.
